MUMBAI: Weak global cues saw the Sensex open with a negative gap of 96 points at 8,939 and dropped to a low of 8,922 in morning deals. Buying in heavyweights like Reliance saw the index move up to a high of 9,114 - an intra-day swing of over 190 points. The Sensex finally closed with a marginal loss of 20 points (0.22%) at 9,015.
The BSE Realty index gained over 3%. The BSE Bankex dropped over 2%. Market breadth was bearish - out of over 2,490 scrips traded, over 1,380 declined.
M&M and HDFC slipped over 4% to Rs 284 and Rs 1,364, respectively.
Reliance Infra dropped over 3% to Rs 501 after the government said the company violated the end-use norms of funds raised via external commercial borrowings.
ICICI Bank declined over 4% to Rs 369. SBI was down over 2% at Rs 1,071. Hindalco, Sun, TCS, ITC, L&T and ONGC also declined.
DLF zoomed over 7% to Rs 159. Maruti added over 4% at Rs 625. ACC gained over 3% at Rs 563.
Reliance gained over 2% at Rs 1,295. BHEL, NTPC, Bharti, Tata Motors and HUL also closed with gains.
Total market turnover (BSE+NSE) was Rs 51,709 crore. Reliance was the most active counter on the BSE with a turnover of Rs 251 crore followed by Educomp (Rs 232 crore) and Reliance Infra (Rs 189 crore).
